Inspired by abstract expressionist writings from William De Kooning and Robert Motherwell , Rocio rethinks what abstract art and drawing means to her through a site- specific drawing installation and a series of drawings that will be exhibited at the Bolsky. Gallery for her thesis show, All-In. The artist uses acrylic paint, duct tape, pink fur, and other materials in her investigative abstract drawings. During her creative process, Rocio started to view the abstract as representational.
Rocio says that “It makes me think that abstract art is representational. We see it in the clouds, the stains of the ground, shadows, the body, the ground, the trash, puzzle games. William de Kooning writes about this in his essay about how abstraction is already present, but people don’t think about it much. Abstraction is inspired by the outside as much as the inside. My drawings are my writing. I’ve been expressing my thoughts and feelings through my countless drawings. I consider myself a drawer not a painter. I handle paint as if I’m drawing with the paint or any other material like tape and fabric.”
Rocio is also interested in space and explores the gallery space through her site-specific drawing installation. She sees the gallery walls, ceiling, and floor as another type of drawing surface.
Rocio Cumplido (b.1994) is a Los Angeles based multidisciplinary artist. She received her BFA degree in Fine Art and MA degree in Studio Art from Maharishi International University in Iowa.
