The rise of social media and cultural diversity, along with numerous other factors, have increased the need for self-awareness, self-control, empathy, and resilience in our youth. As may be expected, these life skills play a large part in this same group’s success in school. Educators like yourself must be prepared to take on greater responsibility in shepherding those skills now for the long-term. The first step is learning what Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is, how it operates, and how to use it.

Understand the research and resources for SEL in order to grasp the impact of positive relationships and emotional connections. Discover the primary tools used for measuring social and emotional growth in children, the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Social Emotional Competencies and the Formative Five skills. These sets of standards spell out the different skills and abilities that children can grow to understand and want to maintain, such as self-confidence, self-motivation, relationship skills, and grit. Bring all of your lessons into fruition by developing a plan of your own based on existing statistics and using CASEL and the Formative Five. Applying your comprehensive plan in your own classroom can initiate the start of greater academic success and higher expectations of your students, and higher potential for positive functioning as an adult.
