Ashley Khalil ('23)

Hi, I'm Ashley, I am an international student from Hong Kong who is in the graduating senior class of Environmental Design at Otis College. My brand of design is evenly balanced between functionalism and beauty. I believe that structural form should have an aesthetic appeal that simultaneously accentuates the natural beauty in its surrounding environment and that is also driven by practical considerations.

Studio VI: New Orleans Housing Complex Project
My site is in the holly grove neighborhood, filled with residential houses. My housing is for low-income residents and families, so it’s affordable housing. This interlocking pattern in my housing is derived from a pinwheel shape idea in my site. The journey through the building is in this zig-zag pattern that pushes movement and mimics the building’s shape. It leads you to seating areas, commerce, and much greenery. I positioned all the programs and housing to create a public path within these private and semi-private spaces. The overall program that was given to me is services to the community such as an assembly hall/community room, computer lab, social enterprise spaces, community garden, and an outdoor amphitheater/gathering space. I also provided some pop-up commerce shops, marketplace, and coffee shop leases near the housing and beside the amphitheater.

Jessica Williams

Hi! I’m a Senior in Comm Arts: Illustration, and traditional media user such as watercolor, gouache and colored pencils, whose love of nature, horror, fantasy, and fairytales has inspired an interest in making the expected, unexpected. My work represents opposites: light and dark, color and monochrome, hot and cold, natural and man-made, or playful and creepy. I like learning new things, exploring new mediums, and am not afraid to take risks to get a great result in my finished piece.
