“Becoming” was created during my sophomore year for an assignment centered on meaningful objects. I chose the betta fish—an animal I’ve grown up with and always been fascinated by. Their fluid movement, vivid design, and strong sense of individuality deeply inspire me. This piece explores the rhythm and movement found in their autonomy.

Safiyah Dawuni is a multidisciplinary artist and designer from Los Angeles, influenced
by music, film, photography, and her Ghanaian heritage. Her work is rooted in spirituality,
transformation, and nature’s geometry. Through ornamental line work, pattern, and
symbolism, she tells stories that explore emotion and perception. Safiyah creates
purposeful design with the goal of uncovering the divine in the everyday life.
