Da Ron Vinson 2024
MFA Fine Arts
As a performance and installation artist, I immerse myself in social interventions
where people's norms are disrupted. Weaving gestures of hospitality—such as serving
sweet tea–offering The Folk Lounge a performance and gathering space which emerged
from an interest in free speech, and community solidarity —and fostering accountability
through communal engagement and research become structural in my work's production
because I believe in holding someone's hand as they navigate the flames of discomfort.
Conviviality serves as a protective shield amidst the polarizing and dangerous terrain
I navigate. Drawing inspiration from African American folklore, with characters like
Brer Rabbit, I explore the dynamics of Signifyin', agency, and mischief. The spectacle
takes center stage before reality intervenes, unveiling my struggle with patriotism
and double consciousness. Through my art, I provoke questions about participation
and accountability within institutional social constructs. It’s Duck season!
