Frequently Asked Questions

What LAS courses do I need for my major?

Please go to the Course Catalogues. The one for you is dated to your Foundation or what would be your Foundation year if you transferred. Look under "Degree Requirements" for a full listing of what LAS courses you will need to take to complete your major. Also see Breakdown of LAS Courses.

When do I take my Liberal Arts & Science courses?

Foundation: Your LAS courses are determined by the section you selected.
Sophomores: Take courses Monday at 3:15 pm and all day Tuesdays.
Juniors: Take courses all day Wednesdays and 8:00 - 11:00 am on Fridays.
Seniors: Take courses on Thursday.

How am I advised for Liberal Arts & Sciences?

Advisement is a two step process:

  1. Using your four-year degree audit, Carrie Malcom, Academic Advising Director,  determines the required LAS courses for your major. The recommended LAS courses are then filled out on the degree audit and sent to your Studio Department.
  2. When you meet with your Studio Department, you will be given your studio classes along with the degree audit with the LAS courses needed to take for the coming semester.  You will create your schedule from your required studio and LAS classes.  LAS classes and course descriptions are posted outside the LAS office and also online at Registration and Records.

We expect each student to take the courses listed on their advisement form. However, if there are any questions or concerns regarding your LAS courses please contact the Academic Advising Director, Carrie Malcom, via phone (310) 846-2550 or email cmalcom@otis.edu.

Once you have a complete advisement form, you register online.

What if I am interested in taking an Independent Studies course?

Preconditions: There is not a similar class being offered (now or later that you could take), your overall GPA is 3.0, a faculty member listed on the LAS door wants to study with you, or you completed the honors program.

Procedure: Write a letter to the chair of LAS, Debra Ballard, outlining your proposed course of study, what you want to do, and who you will do it with. Also address the above preconditions. Debra Ballard will then meet with you to discuss your Independent Study proposal.

What if I have Transfer Credit?

Transfer credit is determined by the Admissions Office during the application for enrollment process.

All transcripts from all schools should be submitted at that time.

If you have any questions regarding your Transfer credit after you have registered for classes, you should contact Carrie Malcom, via phone 310-846-2550 or email cmalcom@otis.edu.
