Information About Active Shooter Situations

Before

For the areas you frequent on campus, know the evacuation routes and think about how you could respond to an active shooter situation.

During

RUN. Identify an escape route. If it is safe to do so, evacuate to a secure location.

HIDE. Seek shelter in a room with a door. Close and lock all windows and doors. Create obstacles to block entry. Turn off lights, silence cell phones, spread out, and shield yourself. If you are outside and/or are unable to safely seek shelter in a secure location, conceal yourself and shield yourself by hiding behind something like a bench or tree. DO NOT respond to any voice commands until you can verify that they are being issued by a Police Officer or Campus Safety Officer.

FIGHT. Only as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger, you may choose to incapacitate the shooter. Team up with those around you, act with physical aggression, and always plan for your next step.

Call 9-1-1 and Campus Safety. If you cannot talk due to your proximity to the shooter, call 9-1-1 and leave the phone line open. You may also message Campus Safety through the LiveSafe App.

When Law Enforcement arrives, remain calm, and follow officers' instructions. Put down any items in your hands (i.e., bags, jackets), raise your hands and spread your fingers, and keep hands visible at all times. Avoid making quick movements toward officers, such as holding on to them for safety. Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating.
