About Us

Launched in 2020, Design Lab builds on a tradition of similar programs that have existed at Otis College of Art and Design for decades and highlights the institution’s longstanding commitment to preparing students for successful careers. In the early 1980s, a similar program called the Brooklyn 7 was launched by Communication Design program founder and Chair Shelia de Bretteville. From the late 1980s through 2008, the program was led by Communication Arts Chair Ave Pildas under the name Otis Design Group. Otis Design Group was a student design studio that created collateral for non-profit organizations, including the City of Los Angeles, Meals on Wheels, Spirit Awakening Foundation, and Hollywood Farmers Market. In late 2020, Design Lab launched, connecting remote-working students to industry through client projects. Since then, the Design Lab team has conducted site visits and completed projects for clients throughout Los Angeles.

How Does Design Lab Benefit Students?

Our student designers work collaboratively to solve real-world design problems, from concept to production. Through this approach, we not only foster creativity but also expose students to a hybrid work culture that combines remote and in-person interactions, instilling in them the technological fluencies crucial in today's workplace. We also place a strong emphasis on developing their presentation and communication skills, equipping them with essential tools for success. Through Design Lab, students build valuable industry connections, providing them with access to opportunities as they transition into the workforce post-graduation.
