Curricular Information

Students

Liberal Arts and Sciences provides students with a diverse and intellectually stimulating environment that cultivates critical tools, enabling students to become informed artists and designers who are prepared to meet global challenges. The curriculum is constructed around  four themes: Connecting to creativity, arguing for humanity, math and science in action, and resourcing the future.

Connecting to Creativity

Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty never forget that Otis students are designers and artists. Whatever the topic at hand, our classrooms explore specific connections between creative practice and the needs of our world.

Arguing for Humanity

Liberal Arts and Sciences courses help artists and designers reason and communicate in a values-rich context. Critical thinking and intellectual rigor are brought to bear as we learn to ask challenging questions about our society, past, present, and future.

Math and Science in Action

Liberal Arts and Sciences courses in math, cognition, ergonomics, and more are tailored to the specific needs of artists and designers. Essential skills with direct applicability characterize these courses, preparing students to flourish in the industries of the future.

Resourcing the Future

Liberal Arts and Sciences courses encourage students to think about how they can use their passion, art, and design skills to address the needs of our planet now and in the future. We prepare students to become lifelong learners who are equipped to meet the unknown challenges ahead.

In August 2020, the Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty collaborated to write a departmental statement on decolonizing our curriculum. We are committed continuously working with Otis College students, faculty, and staff to deepen our decolonizing practices.
