text on thin paper on the wall "A few years ago, I was leaving my apartment and along the sidewalk, I saw a baby squirrel had fallen out of a tree from above the street. Centered dead on the concrete, it laid looking fetal with hardly any fur on its skin. Feeling so sorry, and at a loss for what to do, I moved it out of the way into the dirt. I chose to take the same way back hoping to see it again, and of course it was sitting still in the dirt, dead. The following month or two after, I made sure to walk the same way every day to check on the baby and confirm it was “safe”. Everyday I’d watch its body decompose into what became just bones and fur, eventually shadowed by a blanket of ants. The day the ants moved on, I decided I was finally going to collect what was left of the body, maybe even attempt to preserve its bones. Going back to where I’d left it, the body was gone. Nothing was left. I felt totally drenched in guilt and regret. Subconsiously, I made this baby my own, feeling responsible to keep it safe. I didn’t. I walk the same way every day now."

Janessa Gauthier (b. 2003) is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Los Angeles, CA. Her work digs into an archive of personal experience with decay and pain while questioning the seductive qualities of the damaged. Working sculpturally, she uses a range of raw materials with an interest in the plastic qualities of steel and mold-making for production. Considering preservation as a practice, Janessa investigates her relationship to femininity through the use of the rabbit as icon.
