Four Things to Ask Otis College Student Ambassadors On Your Next Campus Visit
“A campus tour isn’t about being impressed; it’s about feeling informed,” says student ambassador Avery Plummer.

As someone who has been a student ambassador for over two and a half years, I’ve learned that students seem to get the most out of their campus tour when they ask questions. Especially at a private art and design college, what you ask (and learn) can completely change how useful your visit is. So if you plan to come tour Otis College soon, here are my four must-ask questions.
#1: What does a typical day look like for you?
I love this question, because it delves into a current student’s point of view. This question is related to other commonly asked topics such as school-life balance, homework load, how long classes are, and what a student’s weekly schedule might look like.
Art and design school schedules can be intense, and they vary from school to school. An answer to what a typical day looks like can help give you a realistic picture of workload, expectations, and whether the pace feels right for you.
Otis College is very career-driven, and we understand that everyone is here to not only develop their skills, but also get a job after graduation.”
#2: How does Otis help students find internships and job opportunities?
This is an important one, especially since art school is an investment, not only in what you love, but in your career. Through this question a prospective student would learn more about Otis’s career services, guest speakers, Internship and Recruitment Day, job and internship boards, and much more.
Otis College is very career-driven, and we understand that everyone is here to not only develop their skills, but also get a job after graduation. Asking an ambassador about this will help you learn in more detail about our career resources. In addition, many students can offer their own personal experiences with these services and any internships they have had during their time at Otis.
#3: What support and resources do students have outside of the classroom?
I think this is a very important question to ask. While learning more about the curriculum and classes are extremely helpful, I think learning about what resources students have available is just as important. These questions often produce more insight into resources like our Student Learning Center, Student Health and Wellness Center, various shops and labs, Disability Services, Academic Advising, the Resources Exchange, Food Pantry, and so much more.
Having a strong support system on campus, as well as understanding all the resources you have access to, can really help inform your decision.
#4: What made you choose Otis?
This is probably the question I get asked the most during my tours, and I think it’s a great question. Hearing why someone chose Otis can not only give you an insight into what others think makes Otis great, but also what students value. I’ve spoken to many students here and I’ve heard everything from having on-campus dorms, to the variety of labs and shops, to the creative community, to the faculty, to the location, and so much more. Every ambassador’s answer is different and that’s what makes this question so valuable. It gives you a more personal and honest perspective on what draws students to Otis and what keeps them here.
A campus tour isn’t about being impressed; it’s about feeling informed. Tours are often a deciding factor when it comes to choosing the school you plan to apply to or even attend. The best questions help you understand what attending a specific college is actually like, and whether you can genuinely imagine yourself there as part of the campus community. And in my personal opinion, those are the tours where it feels like I am actually helping someone make the right choice.
