Bio and Affiliation
Alumni of the Toy Design program from 2001, his teaching career started over eighteen years ago at Otis, and his classes include technical courses, studio classes, department electives, and Summer of Art programs.
His career has spanned over twenty years at some of the most prominent companies, such as Mattel, Hasbro, Spin Master, JAKKS Pacific, and Razor USA. His profession as a visionary designer, engineer, corporate instructor, and college educator led him to his current role as leading one of the only toy design majors in the United States.
His professional body of work includes some of the world's most iconic brands, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Barbie, Disney, NERF, Razor USA, and Infinity Harmen. His experience stretched through the design and manufacturing divisions of companies in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Markus' passion for education has been integrated throughout his professional time in the industry. He co-founded the Mattel Digital Training Center, which offered over 150 classes yearly. He designed and taught courses both domestically and internationally. The programs centered around the advancement in software and manufacturing workflows. It had a tremendously positive impact on Mattel and its partners, such as Fisher-Price and American Girl.
He has continued to further his personal and educational development and has completed over a hundred 2D and 3D design classes. He completed the Landmark Form, Advance Course, and Leadership Class, participated in Toastmasters and several improv classes, and helped refine his pedagogical practices.
With 12 years of teaching experience in the Toy Design, Foundation, and Extension Departments at Otis, Markus Maciel has provided the opportunity to spearhead department initiatives and new courses and placed countless graduates into rewarding careers.
