Bio and Affiliation

Kate Harding is an interdisciplinary artist who was born in Martinsville, Indiana and grew up mostly in rural Missouri on a small family farm. While her anchor was for ten years New York City where she taught at Parsons the New School of Design, Pratt Institute and School of Visual Arts, she is currently based in Los Angeles, California, and teaching in the Fine Arts Department of Otis College of Art and Design. 

In her practice, she becomes immersed within the voices and histories of site, land and the local to invite consideration of embodied communication and more-than-human ways of knowing and precarity, creating and facilitating spaces for conversation and meeting. Areas of research and emphasis within Kate's artistic practice are land and sea based life-practices and site specific forms of making that prioritize stewardship and a respectful reciprocal conversation with nature. Her work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, video, performance, installation and calling attention to in-between places. 

In residence in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland on the Isle of Eigg during the summer months, Kate tends the croft of Captain Celia Bull, looking after a small flock of Shetland sheep, continuing her embodied research practice and sailing aboard Celia’s high latitude sailboat, Selkie, whenever possible. Upon each return to Eigg since 2022, Kate brings the process of making inks and charcoals from plants and seaweeds, finding the colors and textures of the land of her ancestors (Scotland) while in conversation with and learning from the island and weather itself and the generous community of long-time residents there in long walks and talks in land and sea, amongst the ever changing atmosphere.

Now based between Los Angeles and Isle of Eigg, Kate continues her multi-disciplinary practice in this constellation of places with deep respect for each.
