Bio and Affiliation
Allen Brewer is an Illustrator and exhibition artist from St. Paul Minnesota. After
receiving a BFA in Illustration and working on campaigns, books, editorials, advertising,
murals, stage and tv production and scenic work, Allen moved to LA to attend the Art
MFA program at CalArts.
Brewer has taught Design and Illustration at MCAD (Mpls), College of Visual Arts (St.
Paul), Chaffey College (Rancho Cucamonga), CalArts, and Otis, respectively, for the
last 21 years. His practice relies on a multi-disciplinary approach to concept and
materials, often referencing non-western and non-traditional modes of working like
Folk Art, using found objects and Phenomenology.
Allen comes from a long line of painters/Illustrators, going back to his great great
grandfather Nicholas Brewer in the early 20th century and his 6 sons, of which 4 worked
as illustrators, painters and educators. His love of nature painting and representational
painting is only one extension of an overall interdisciplinary repertoire.
Allen appreciates the diversity and backgrounds of all student learners and works to guide each individual along a path that makes sense to them.
