Darren Waterston ('88)'s vast canvases combine pure atmosphere with bits of flora and fauna and chinoiserie silhouettes. His work is based on a deep understanding of the history of paint and the relationship between science, alchemy and the artistic process. A California native who lives in New York,Waterston admits that if he'd been slightly less interested in art, he could easily have become a naturalist or scientist. ...

He has had one-person exhibitions at the Fresno Museum of Art; Frist Center for Contemporary Art, Nashville; and Bellevue Museum, Washington. He was awarded the Richard Diebenkorn teaching fellowship, and St. Ann's press has published a monograph on his work. He is included in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Oakland Museum of Art; Orange County Museum of Art; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Portland Art Museum, OR, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and many other corporate and private collections.
