Roy Dowell's billboard on LaCienega
07/31/12
Today's the last day to see a great billboard! Roy Dowell, Chair of Graduate Fine Arts, was commissioned for the Made in L.A.2012 biennial to create a mural on a busy street in Los Angeles. (La Cienega between Washington and Venice Blvds) The exhibition, on view at the Hammer Museum, L.A.'s Municipal Art Gallery, and LAXArt through September 2, surveys work by sixty Los Angeles-based artists.
Dowell's billboard is inspired by design, advertising, and popular and world cultures. The billboard recycles scraps of old billboards, combining the languages of public art and large-scale advertising, while connecting the sources and visual elements to his thirteen sculptures on display at the Hammer. (look for the Otis "O"!)
