James Elkins’s lecture, “Future Directions of the First-year Curriculum in Higher Education,” will cover the following topics within the context of the AICAD consortium:
- The history of the first year up to 1960, and how it has produced a confusion of different exercises and goals
- The history of revisions to the world art history survey from the 19th century to Black Lives Matter, and how it continues to present European and North American narratives and values
- Current experiments and future directions in remaking introductory art history and theory
- Current experiments and future directions in combining studio practice, art history, and theory

These events are part of the Foundation Department's continuing curriculum development activities to examine directions in higher education that will prepare us to better serve students' educational essentials.
