The Los Angeles County Art Institute, which became the Otis College of Art and Design, was at the center of ceramic’s evolution as an artistic medium in America. In 1954 Peter Voulkos became head of its ceramics department. He brought with him energy, strength and a bold streak influenced by Abstract Expressionism–all new elements for the discipline.
 

Otis Honors Pioneers in Online Education and Fine Art; Lynda Weinman and John Mason to Receive Honorary Degrees

Los Angeles, CA - May 06, 2015 - Otis College of Art and Design will award honorary doctorates to Lynda Weinman, co-founder of the pioneering distance education company lynda.com, and renowned ceramics sculptor and Otis alumnus John Mason (’57) at the 2015 Commencement ceremony May 10, 2015.
 

Otis artists in Whitney Museum Biennial

The Whitney Museum Biennial features work by two Otis artists who blur the difference between art and craft: alumnus John Mason ('57), a leader of the Ceramics Revolution started by Peter Voulkos at Otis in the 1950’s, and Fine Arts faculty member Joel Otterson, whose work combines aspects of domestic handicraft with traditional sculptural material.  This 77th Biennial, which runs through May 25, presents work by 103 artists at the Whitney's Madison Avenue location.
