  • Silke Otto-Knapp is a painter and associate professor of painting and drawing at UCLA. 
     
    She has had recent one-person exhibitions at Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles; Galerie Buchholz, Berlin; the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive; Greengrassi, London; Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London; Kunstverein Munich, Germany; Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York; the Banff Centre, Canada; Modern Art Oxford, UK; and Tate Britain, London.

    Sergej Jensen’s work draws on a wide range of materials and formal references. Primarily known for his textile works, his lyrical compositions incorporate a variety of fabrics, from burlap and linen to silk and wool.
     
    He recently exhibited his work in the show "Classic" at Regen Projects, and his work is also included in LACMA's show "Variations: Conversations in and around Abstract Painting.”
  • Otis College of Art and Design Fine Arts Department presents the film collaborative from Berlin OJOBOCA.

    Rea Tajiri is a New York based filmmaker and educator who has written and directed an eclectic body of dramatic, experimental, and documentary films currently in commercial and educational distribution. She is also an Associate Professor at Temple University in the Film Media Arts Department.

New Filipina Barbie Inspired by Culture, Fashion, and Family

A new Filipina Barbie doll, Mutya Barbie - recalling the glamour of old-school Filipino beauty pageants - has been released by Mattel as part of the brand's Global Glamour Collection. The debut Barbie doll of designer Carlyle Nuera, Mutya Barbie was inspired by both his culture and his own family.
 

Alumnus Carlyle Nuera Designs New Barbie Doll

Alumnus Carlyle Nuera (’10) debuts his first doll for The Barbie™ Collection - the Mutya™ Barbie® Doll, which is part of the Global Glamour Collection.
 
Nuera has also designed  the Fashionistas® and So In Style® lines, as well as stunning OOAKs like Barbie® Loves Adam Lambert and Haute Hiver Barbie® and has created fashion packs, including for Ken® doll.

Designers came to toys from varied careers

Actively seeking a career in toys is a relatively new phenomenon. Toy design schools didn’t exist a generation ago, which means most veterans of the toy industry got into the business by accident. Product and industrial design is a common background for toy designers, as is fashion, illustration and animation.
 
Here are the stories of six designers who never could have predicted they would be working in toys as adults:
 

Barbie's Housewarming Party

Otis and Mattel partnered in a unique creative collaboration among students from five different creative disciplines to celebrate Malibu, CA's most fashionable resident, Barbie ®, as she renovates her new home. The show entitled "Barbie's Housewarming Party" hosted by Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, CA, featured student  work.

Barbie's Housewarming Party will feature work by students including:

Barbie's Malibu Dream House

Visit Barbie®'s new dreamhouse in Malibu, on display at Santa Monica Place for a limited time. Her house has been redesigned by a team of students, working with Mattel. See bathing suits and cover ups, designed with alumnus Rod Beattie ('86) of Bleu, art collection, furniture, and fitness center. Students from fashion design, product design, fine arts, toy design, and liberal arts and sciences created this environment.

Come to Santa Monica Place for a housewarming party for Barbie's new house!
