What are those lighters on La Cienega?

08/13/12

As part of the Made in L.A. 2012 biennial, both FIne Arts Chair Meg Cranston and Graduate Fine Arts Chair Roy Dowell were commissioned to create large billboards for LAXArt, on one of L.A.'s busy thorougfares. Cranston's billboard, on view during August, references her work on display at the Hammer Museum. The exhibition, on view at the Hammer, L.A.'s Municipal Art Gallery, and LAXArt  through September 2, surveys work by sixty Los Angeles-based artists.

As she explains, "The question is what does it advertise? What is pictured is often only metaphorically related to the product being sold. Puppies can be used to sell toilet paper or an image of a beautiful woman to sell snow tires. To me the lighters have poetic resonance but I will let the audience decide.”
