Recent Grads Told to Go Digital, says Variety

02/21/11

"These days, when media students ask their instructors and career counselors for advice about finding a job, they usually hear two words: go digital," opened Karen Idelson's piece on career opportuities for Variety's Technology News on Feb 17.  The piece went on to explore the fields of multimedia, online marketing, social networking, and designing for mobile devices. After quoting statistics from Otis' 2010 Report on the Creative Economy of the L.A. Region, which predicts a 10.4% increase in digital media employment over the next five years, she highlights comments from Otis Adjunct Professor Kathleen Milnes, whose analysis of digital media employment trends was commissioned by Otis for the 2009 Report on the Creative Economy. Milnes believes that the increase in employment in this sector will far exceed the Report's forecast, arguing that "the way to measure jobs in these kinds of new media is still evolving ... so a lot of these jobs are miscategorized or lumped into another category."
