Exploration of a Possible New MFA Program Offering
Otis College of Art and Design is exploring the possibility of establishing a new MFA program in the field of Lighting Design. This program would build on the existing Certificate program in Lighting Design developed by Architecture/Landscapes/Interiors program Chair, Linda Pollari, and would, if ultimately established, position Otis at the center of a burgeoning industry while generating additional enrollments/revenue.
Architectural Lighting Design is a field that concerns itself primarily with the illumination of buildings and spaces for functional, aesthetic, and experiential value. The Lighting Design industry is growing at a rapid pace nationally and internationally, and has an important base in Southern California. The images below show how powerful and moving well-designed lighting can be as part of a holistic spatial experience in civic, corporate, residential, retail, hotel, and entertainment spaces, and how light can enhance functionality, sustainability, mood, and energy.
An important step in our exploration of a possible Lighting Design program has been the formation of a strategic partnership with four lighting industry leaders, including entrepreneur, author, and CEO of LF Illumination Jack Zukerman; CEO & founder of The Lighting Design Alliance and veteran lighting designer Chip Israel; leading lighting designer and partner with Kaplan/Gehring/McCarrol Architectural Lighting Michael Gehring, and award-winning lighting designer and founder of Sean O’Connor Lighting Sean O’Connor. These lighting design leaders will provide curricular guidance and critical industry connections to both funding and jobs.
Otis is pursuing funding opportunities, including capital and in-kind gifts from leading lighting design firms, manufacturers, foundations, trusts, and agencies, in support of this program launch.
