  • For the second year in a row, Otis will be hosting the Community Works Institute - Summer West. This is a five day professional development program for K-16 teachers focused on place based education, service learning and sustainability.   • I Know What You Did This Summer is a series of bi-weekly gatherings in the Bolsky Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design organized around informal slideshow presentations by curators, artists, writers and producers in the Los Angeles area. Taking the form of a personal travelogue, presenters will share places, experiences, and encounters during summer travel near and far. I Know What You Did This Summer is an occasion to enjoy drinks and conversation among friends, colleagues and our community.

Arts Assessment Strategies for Educators


Educators who are versed in strong assessment strategies provide more meaningful arts experiences for their students. Quality arts education begins with clear lesson and assessment criteria. Thoughtful assessment strategies enhance arts experiences by making students and teachers more cognizant of what is being taught and learned. In this course participants explore state-of-the-art assessment techniques including essential questions; journaling; portfolios; rubrics to measure the quality of learning for tasks and criteria; Visual Thinking Strategies; and prompts for pair-share and small group discussion. You’ll deepen your understanding of assessment strategies and comprehensive lesson planning through interactive experiences and engaging discussions. As a result, you will be able to design richer, project-based experiences that scaffold learning and customize assessment tools that meet grade level VAPA standards. Consequently your students will have more clarity regarding the tasks and criteria for projects, resulting in a deeper level of engagement, heightened awareness and problem solving skills, and more personal responsibility for their learning.
