  • Professor Julia Czerniak is educated in both architecture and landscape architecture, and serves as Associate Dean at the School of Architecture at Syracuse University. Through her own design practice, CLEAR, and most recently as the former inaugural Director of UPSTATE: Syracuse’s SOA’s Center for Design, Research and Real-Estate, Julia’s  research and practice draw on the intersection of landscape and architecture.

Intermediate Photography


A course for the student who wishes to improve and perfect general photographic skills and achieve a greater understanding of equipment, materials, darkroom techniques, and procedures as they all apply to aspects of photography. Topics include metering and exposures, lenses and filters, depth of field, camera formats and films. Intermediate darkroom skills for pushing/ pulling film, printing difficult images, and final presentation options are demonstrated and discussed. Explorations in styles and content, practical experiments in shooting common and unusual situations, changing print effect through paper choices and darkroom techniques. Emphasis is placed on developing both the technical and creative aspects of photography. Students are guided in developing their own individual direction and photographic concepts, and complete a self-guided project. Class includes reading assignments, critiques, and slide presentations of historical and contemporary photography.

Prerequisite: Introduction to B/W Darkroom.
