  • Professor Julia Czerniak is educated in both architecture and landscape architecture, and serves as Associate Dean at the School of Architecture at Syracuse University. Through her own design practice, CLEAR, and most recently as the former inaugural Director of UPSTATE: Syracuse’s SOA’s Center for Design, Research and Real-Estate, Julia’s  research and practice draw on the intersection of landscape and architecture.

  • Alumni from Otis, Art Center, and CalArts are invited to celebrate the holidays at our second annual alumni holiday mixer. Eat, drink, be merry, and enjoy live music! Alumni are invited to bring a guest, but this event is closed to the public.

College Preparation: 2D Design


This course introduces elements and principles of two-dimensional design using graphite, acrylic, and collage. Explore the basics of visual communication and visual literacy while creating drawings, paintings, and mixed-media. Course covers the elements of design including point, line, form, shape, space, movement, color, pattern, and texture. Includes the study of the principles of design such as balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity used to organize the elements. Advice and direction is provided to those students preparing a portfolio for Otis or other college art programs. Includes a guest lecture by a counselor from Otis’ Admissions Office who offers information on college requirements.

Prerequisite: Drawing experience preferred, but not required

First Class Materials: Scissors, Glue, 18" x 24” white Strathmore paper pad, pencil, ruler, eraser, 8 or more different sheets of black, white, grey, silver, aluminum foil, or patterned papers. Find fun, strange and exciting ones. No newsprint or color.

IMPORTANT:
• All students attending courses on the Goldsmith Campus must check in with Continuing Education staff in the lobby of the Ahmanson Building
