Continuing Education Course

SEM: 41

Teaching Internship

This course places qualified students who are interested in art and education, in a choice of structured internship positions in kindergarten through twelfth grade (K – 12) public school classes. Students observe and assist teachers with a “Single Subject Art Credential” in their classrooms and have significant interactions with students from diverse populations, as required by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing in the State of California. The internship provides an opportunity to expand ones understanding of education theory in conjunction with the reality of art curricula in the studio / classroom. Weekly assignments include shared analysis and debriefings of reflective field annotations through electronic journals, a final Reflective Essay, and Oral Presentation with visuals. This internship is also a chance to establish contacts and begin networking with potential mentors in the broader Los Angeles public school systems. This is a blended course, meaning a portion of the class meetings will be conducted online. Required for students in the Teacher Credential Preparation Track of the Art Education Certificate Program.

Prerequisite: Teaching for Learning I or instructor’s approval

First class materials: Note-taking materials, digital file of resume draft
