Painterly Painting: From Impressionism to Expressionism


Explore paint as light, form, gesture, and expression. This course studies the principles and techniques of Impressionism using brush stroke and color as a means to interpret light. Students explore Expressionism using gesture and painterly ways to illustrate people and still life. Also covers techniques used in Abstract Expressionism and automatic painting.

Course includes the study of contemporary painterly techniques and subject matter apropos for today. Acrylic and/or oils on canvas may be used.

Prerequisite: None

First class materials: Come prepared to paint with acrylics or water based oils, brushes, paper pad (at least 24" x 30" or larger), vine charcoal; canvas not required for first meeting
