The Art of Kite Building with Tom Van Sant

Kites have traditionally been thought of as toys; a light frame usually of wood, covered with paper or cloth, to be flown in the wind at the end of a string. Join renowned artist, sculptor, and kite-builder, Tom Van Sant for this hands-on kite design and construction workshop. In this course, students construct, under guidance from the instructor, a large (6 foot), durable, collapsible, easily flyable, life-lasting kite of their own creative design. Course covers basic aerodynamics, global and local wind flows and weather, management of events, use of dissimilar materials, banners, flags, inflatables, puppetry, caricatures, life drawing, castle making, and body painting on children and adults. Course culminates in the first Otis Kite Festival to be held at the beach, featuring the students’ kites, inflatables, flags, banners, and some of Tom’s kites, for the benefit and pleasure of the Otis student body, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends…and of course their children and grandchildren. Class members assist with festival management in their interest area. Course also reviews “life lessons” essential to relations with the public and to their successful representation of themselves and Otis College: courtesy, honesty, patience, positive attitude, good humor, and safety. Class meets on campus with field trips to the Tom Van Sant studio in the Santa Monica Canyon.

Prerequisite: None

First class materials: Note-taking materials; $50 materials fee payable to the instructor for structural elements.
