    Bob Nickas is a critic and independent curator based in New York, having organized more than ninety exhibitions since 1984.
    He was Curatorial Advisor at P.S.1/MoMA in New York between 2004-07, where his exhibitions include: 
    Lee Lozano: Drawn From Life; 
    William Gedney—Christopher Wool: Into the Night; 
    Stephen Shore: American Surfaces; 
    Wolfgang Tillmans: Freedom From The Known.

[He] operates in two distinct realms: in the empty spaces of contemporary art institutions and in urban settings with their preexisting orders.   • Zackary Drucker is an independent artist, cultural producer, and trans woman who breaks down the way we think about gender, sexuality, and seeing. She has performed and exhibited her work internationally in museums, galleries, and film festivals including the Whitney Biennial 2014, MoMA PS1, Hammer Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, MCA San Diego, and SF MoMA, among others. Drucker is an Emmy-nominated Producer for the docu-series This Is Me, as well as a Producer on Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Transparent.

Introduction to Photography

This studio course in photography combines technical information with conceptual skills. Topics include using a 35mm camera, lenses, black and white film choices, ASA, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, and using optional equipment such as light meters, tripods, and cable releases. This course also covers the formal elements of photography such as basic lighting, composition, and shooting in natural light to create and produce great photographs. Students develop a vocabulary for “reading” and evaluating images. The course also includes assignments, demonstrations, an in-class photography shoot, 6 lab/darkroom sessions, individual and group critiques during the midterm, final presentation of the students’ photographs, art/photo history self-study, lecture, and handouts.

Prerequisites: None

First Class Materials: Students must have a 35mm camera that uses film and can be used manually, or a camera that is both manual and automatic. Equipment from the Otis Photography Lab is available for check-out during class time only. Students may also use the professional darkroom at Otis College during the hours outside of class set by the Otis Photo Lab.
