    Portrait Painting

    This portrait-painting course uses models as subject while focusing on alla prima (working wet into wet to complete a painting in one session) portrait and head painting techniques. Finding poetic focus and essence of the subject is the primary directive of this course. Course emphasizes the use of values, shapes, edges, and color temperature. Students also explore fundamentals of composition, color mixing, limited palette, painting techniques, and methodologies.

    Prerequisite: XDWG0000, Life Drawing, XPTG0000, Introduction to Painting, and/or equivalent knowledge

    First class materials: 1tube black oil paint, 1 tube white (Titanium) oil paint, 1 canvas board (16" x 20" or 11" x 14"), 1 can turpenoid or Gamsol, 1 flat medium bristle brush (6 or 8), paper towels, bar of soap, small metal can, pallet.
