This course enables students to develop their painting skills using the classic painting techniques and powerful visual design methods of the Old Masters (Rembrandt, Velazquez, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Constable…). Students use oil paint, egg tempera, and ink to learn the Old Masters’ unique approach to color, composition, form and expression, and then learn how to incorporate these methods with their own personal subject matter and imagery, to create visually expressive and skilled paintings. Traditional and contemporary approaches to still life, landscape, self-portrait and abstract subjects are explored. Students work from life, photographs and their imaginations.
