ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION SUPPORTS “DOIN IT IN PUBLIC” EXHIBITION AND PUBLICATIONS

LOS ANGELES – July 30, 2010 – The Andy Warhol Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to Otis College of Art and Design in support of the exhibition “Doin it in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman’s Building" and accompanying two-volume publication. The exhibition examines the significant role the L.A. Woman's Building played in the development of the feminist art movement in Southern California in the 1970s through the early 1990s. The catalogue documents the ground-breaking collective practices that shaped a generation of feminist artists and theorists, and presents the perspectives of younger feminist scholars who consider the importance and relevance of the Woman's Buliding to contemporary artistic practice in California and beyond.

“The Warhol Foundation's focus is to support contemporary visual art, particularly work that is experimental and under-recognized,” said Warhol Foundation President Joel Wachs. “Since the Woman's Building was a major force in the feminist art movement and the L.A. art scene that is unfamiliar to many, we are very pleased to be supporting the exhibition and catalog. The public will now have a unique opportunity to appreciate the Woman’s Building artists and their work.”

The exhibition will be featured at Otis’ Ben Maltz Gallery opening on October 1, 2011 on view through January 28, 2012 and is part of The Getty’s larger initiative “Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980” which will document and preserve the history of postwar art in Southern California, collaborating with select regional art institutions beginning October 1, 2011. The exhibition is also supported by The Getty Foundation and the Barbara Lee Family Foundation.
